For all of us who love our breasts and anyone who has been affected by breast cancer, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As the second most common type of cancer among women and a leading cause of death in the United States, it’s worth remembering that early detection is the best way to fight this deadly disease.

Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Women have a variety of breast symptoms that can be indicators of different health conditions. According to Intermountain Healthcare, it’s important to see your doctor if you’re experiencing any of the following:

  • New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit).
  • Thickening or swelling of part of the breast.
  • Irritation or dimpling of breast skin.
  • Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast.
  • Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area.
  • Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood.
  • Any change in the size or the shape of the breast.
  • Pain in any area of the breast.

Early detection can save lives. If detected early, most women are able to avoid surgery and chemotherapy, which carry a significant risk of developing severe side effects like permanent pain, loss of sensation, fatigue and depression. Ninety-nine percent of women who detect cancer early live at least five or more years. Screening begins with a health provider exam and mammogram, before moving on to more exploratory methods including an ultrasound, an MRI and/or biopsy.

Cannabis helps relieves pain from Breast Cancer

According to NBC News, the majority of people with breast cancer are not experiencing the benefits of cannabis.  Using a survey to find out how well people feel their treatment is working, a team at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York has found evidence that suggests greater than 42 percent of women were using marijuana for relief from symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, pain, insomnia, anxiety and stress.
